Welcome to Fraser Stone. Stone sits at the heart of Steven Fraser’s idea of what is beautiful.
Beauty, for him, begins with the most basic of elements. His walls are wrought from an ancient tradition of building without mortar. Stone pulled from fields, river beds and mountain tops are trimmed and fitted to create a functional, beautiful structure that can transform any space.
Used to retain soil or to help define an area, when stone is put with stone each wall begins to live, and we’re reminded again that we are part of the great, ongoing life of this world.
His sculpture, too, reminds us that there is life everywhere, even in the stones. The figures that emerge from the rock in his carving all speak of the call and response of life in community, the fundamental give and take that makes us who we are.
Fraser Stone is a growing stone sculpture and design studio based in southern Ontario.
Steven Fraser offers a passion for a variety of work in stone, from the Old World craft of drystone masonry to letter cutting and custom-carved features in stone.
"The use of stone, whether in wall-building or letter cutting, connects us to an older way of life, to an ancient way of seeing. It connects us to a time when we understood our place in the world perhaps better than we do now. Drystone walls are walls built in the Old World style, without mortar, interlocked in a way that lets gravity do all the work. These granite fieldstone or limestone walls – a beautiful alternative to cast-brick construction -- can be used to retain soil, or as more ornamental structures that help define a space.Lettering and numbering is done by hand, the chisel cutting deep into the stone to create a readable shadow. From house numbers to family names to favourite verses, words cut in stone can have dramatic effect."
